40 From 40: 1992

1992 was not a great year for pop. It was almost an eclectic one, which started with Nevermind knocking Michael Jackson's Dangerous off Billboard number one and ended with the soundtrack to The Bodyguard selling ridiculous amounts, but the UK charts were giving house room to bands like KWS and the toytown techno mini-craze, where Shakespear's Sister's Stay managed eight weeks at number one. SAW had faded and nobody quite knew what to do. 1992 was also the year of high grade controversy in the Sex book, Body Count's Cop Killer and Sinead O'Connor's Pope photo, and of course David Bowie reciting the Lord's Prayer at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Our collection is for large parts a loud and abrasive one, though consciousness rap, proto-Britpop, indie jangle, soaring electropop and druggy intransigence also score highly.
