Sweeping The Nation Singles Of 2007: Numbers 100-51

Bless the single. Increasingly under attack by the premeditated advance of consumerism, wherein the 'track' is now king and the 7" and CD single shelf space depletes by the week, that one two-to-seven minute burst of artist/label handpicked goodness is still more often than not the deciding factor in which way your affection for an artist lies. All of these came out on vinyl, CDS or that newfangled download thing as standalone pieces, and we respect them for that. And then we put them in a big two-part list.

To be honest we're not entirely sure we'd agree with this being first off even in a couple of months, but even in its lo-fi state there's something immensely likeable about "The Sound of Mature Huddersfield", Simon Armitage's shot at forming a band in his 40s.
Leftover single and clear career highlight from band who appear to have turned into, well, The Band.
Ubiquity be damned. The following remix of Listen Up also be damned.
Yeah, we're a blog alright. Pretty successful for a song that doesn't get going for two and three quarter minutes, too.
Despite how we seem to be the only UK blogger who didn't receive a promo of this. A shame, as the extra track on it, Tom Waits Blues, is a Piano Has Been Drinking-esque take on the lead track.
The band whom, equal with Brakes, we saw the most often live in 2007, more by accident than design it has to be admitted but even so.
Really haven't talked enough about this Boston folk-pop octet, whose album did qualify for this year as it had a limited release ahead of full issue in January and is well worth tracking down.
Are we going on about PWL too much now? Stuff you, he's great and with BBC Radio 1 in Wales now onside the future's bright. Still haven't found out why he completely changed his acoustic slot time at Truck, though.
And, so we hear and the band are welcome to correct us if this is wrong, about a fortnight after release they split up. The unique STN touch in full order there.
